Gramoflor and its substrates for poinsettias

At the gates of summer, it is time to plan the medium-long cycle crops so that they are ready at the end of autumn-winter

The Euphorbia pulcherrima, more commonly known as Poinsetia or Easter Flower, of tropical origin and short photoperiod, that colors our houses at Christmas, is a demanding crop, since it requires special lighting conditions for its proper flowering, optimal management of irrigation and humidity in the root ball, and an environmental temperature higher than 5ºC during its last stage in the nurseries (September-October-November).

In addition to the aforementioned requirements, this crop will be in the nurseries for between 5 and 6 months, so the choice of a good substrate is essential for the plants to find the optimal conditions of humidity, temperature and nutrients throughout their cycle.

At Gramoflor for years we have elaborated various substrates for the cultivation of Poinsettias, combining blond peat and black peat in different proportions and structures to favor aeration and drainage in the root balls. To which we add various additives such as gramoXchange® that increases the cation exchange capacity (CIC) or special fertilizers with macro and micro elements to meet the demands of the Poinsettias, and that they do not present symptoms of nutritional deficiencies during their entire cycle of culture.

In the new factory of Gramoflor Ibérica in Valencia, in addition to the aforementioned additives, we can incorporate into these substrates alternative raw materials to peat, such as gramoFLAKES®, which offers enormous advantages to the substrates used in medium-long cycle crops. since in addition to offering good drainage and aeration from the beginning, they keep the structure stable throughout the crop without decomposing, thus avoiding waterlogging in the last months of cultivation, which can be very harmful.
