Description:

The Magnolia ( Magnolia grandiflora ) is an evergreen tree belonging to the Magnoliaceae Family. It is a species of great ornamental interest that can reach 30 meters in height, has a dense crown with a certain pyramidal shape. The bark is smooth and gray when the specimen is young and as it grows the bark cracks and turns browner.

It has a very branched bearing, populated with leaves of a dark shiny green color and leathery texture, they are up to 20 cm long and up to 10 cm wide, with an entire margin and ovate, which are arranged oppositely.

The Magnolia has an impressive bloom formed by large white/cream hermaphroditic flowers, 15 to 30 cm in diameter with 3 petaloid sepals and 6 petals. The fruits are similar to pineapples with a reddish woody texture. They need at least 10 years for the seeds to germinate.

Culture:

Originally from the Southeastern United States, it has been cultivated for the quality of its wood, including for its medicinal properties. They can grow in full sun in areas that are not so hot, although they prefer semi-shade.

They do not tolerate large frosts, if these are intense and continued over time the specimen can be seriously affected.

They can grow in calcareous soils, but prefer acidic soils. They must have good drainage, deep and enriched with organic matter.

They do not need pruning, although it is necessary to remove dry branches to promote their development. Pruning is applied to maintain the bearing of its glass if necessary.

Little prone to pests, they can be affected by aphids and aphids, which can be solved by applying a treatment at the right time and dose.
